Actor Jang Dong-joo, who had previously claimed to be a victim of hacking and extortion, has suddenly announced his retirement.
In the early hours of the 15th, Jang posted a lengthy message on his social media account, stating, "As of today, I am laying down my life as the actor Jang Dong-joo," officially declaring his retirement from the entertainment industry.
Jang wrote, "I have received so much love and support while living under the name of an actor for a long time," adding, "All the moments I spent laughing and crying in front of the camera were the brightest times of my life." He expressed his gratitude to his fans, saying, "I sincerely thank the directors, staff, and fellow actors who believed in me and worked with me despite my shortcomings. Above all, thanks to the fans who always stood by my side, I was able to walk this path happily until the end."
He concluded, "Although I am leaving the stage, I will never forget the love you have sent me. Thank you sincerely for loving the actor Jang Dong-joo until now."
Since last year, Jang had caused concern among fans by sharing his unstable state of mind and claims of being a victim of hacking through his social media multiple times. Previously, in October of last year, he sparked controversy by suddenly posting a black image on his social media with the caption, "I am sorry." At the time, his agency stated they were "checking the situation," and the matter was settled after they were able to get in touch with him.
Later, in January, he claimed to have been a victim of phone hacking, stating, "I have suffered financial losses amounting to billions of won due to extortion by a hacker." Regarding money borrowed from acquaintances, he stated, "I will definitely pay it back."
