Webtoonist and television personality Kian84 is making headlines after one of his artworks appeared on a secondhand trading platform with a six-figure price tag.
Recently, a post appeared on the secondhand trading platform Karrot Market listing an original piece by Kian84 titled "Starry Night in Cheongdam." The asking price was set at a staggering 150 million won, drawing significant attention. The seller wrote, "I am selling this due to a move," adding, "The iconography is more unique than other works, and the oil painting texture is different. Please only reach out if you are genuinely interested."
The artwork in question was unveiled during Kian84's first solo exhibition, "Full Possession," which ran from March 25 to April 5, 2022. At the time, Kian84 introduced the exhibition himself through his YouTube channel and the MBC program "I Live Alone."
At the time, Kian84 explained that the core theme of the work was "desire," stating, "I was very impressed by the apartments in the Cheongdam area that I saw while running along the Han River. I wondered if people these days feel that apartments along the Han River are like treasures. I like Vincent van Gogh's 'The Starry Night,' so I created this as a parody."
Back then, Kian84 donated the entire net profit from the exhibition, totaling 87 million won, to the Korea Association of Child Welfare. However, as one of the exhibition pieces appeared as an expensive secondhand item worth double the total donation amount, reactions questioning whether it was for "resale purposes" followed. As the controversy grew, the sales post has since been deleted.
