G-DRAGON Faces Backlash Over Controversial Outfit; Agency Issues Apology for 'Lack of Cultural Sensitivity'

Singer G-DRAGON (real name Kwon Ji-yong) has become embroiled in a controversy regarding his performance outfit, leading his agency to issue an official apology.

G-DRAGON performed at the 'K-SPARK IN MACAU' event held at an outdoor performance venue in Macau on May 2. Following the event, the text printed on his outfit sparked widespread controversy.

Critics pointed out that the shirt, which featured a design combining a Dutch phrase meaning "sexually aroused person" with a term referring to Black people, was racist and offensive. Furthermore, because the text was printed in a significantly large size rather than as a subtle design, international fans raised questions and criticism regarding the intent behind it.

As the controversy grew, G-DRAGON's agency, Galaxy Corporation, released an official statement on May 4 to apologize. The agency stated, "We sincerely apologize for the inclusion of text on the performance outfit that was inappropriate in terms of social and cultural context."

They added, "Through this incident, we have reaffirmed the importance of cultural sensitivity and responsible review. We will more thoroughly inspect and improve our overall internal review and verification processes, including styling."

The agency further emphasized, "Moving forward, we will act with greater care and responsibility to ensure that we respect the diverse cultural backgrounds and values of our global fans in all activities related to our artists."
