BTS’ SUGA says being in the public eye is simply part of the job ― and it doesn’t weigh on him like it used to.

In a one-on-one interview with U.S. music outlet Rolling Stone released on April 16 KST, SUGA shared, “My job is basically living under people’s gaze. It’s not always comfortable, but I don’t really look at other people’s opinions, so it doesn’t feel that hard.”

Asked about the challenges of being an idol given his focus on rap and producing in hip-hop, he admitted, “Before I moved up to Seoul, when I was making music in Daegu, I didn’t really understand friends who were idols. But once I tried it, I realized you do more, you’re busier, and it’s not easy. After doing it and feeling it for myself, I got it ― and I think this job suits me.”

Reflecting on BTS then vs. now, SUGA said his mindset has shifted.

“I used to be overly competitive. I pushed myself so hard to hit goals that I’d burn through my emotions and health. Now that I’m older and a bit more relaxed, I want to enjoy activities more,” he shared. On group promotions, he added, “Because of military service we couldn’t promote as a group, so we focused on individual activities. But even before enlistment, we naturally thought we’d regroup. Overseas, some people find that surprising, but for us it was the most natural choice.”

SUGA, who took part in producing BTS’ fifth studio album, ‘ARIRANG,’ said, “Our biggest goal was to try sounds we hadn’t presented before. Writing a lot and then cutting back wasn’t easy, but it was fun, and I’m satisfied ― it’s a well-made pop album. Rather than pushing one specific track, I cared about overall balance and focused on aligning a variety of opinions.”

On BTS’ teamwork, he said, “It’s genuinely fun when we’re together. After going through so much side by side, we’re like comrades. That family-like bond is our team’s strength. If we have the will, I think we can keep going into our 70s and 80s. Maybe we won’t perform on stage the same way, but we can keep going in other forms.”

Rolling Stone released SUGA’s one-on-one interview following RM and JIN. Videos of the other members will roll out sequentially.
