On the afternoon of the 15th, distributor Showbox announced the date and dropped the international trailer.
Set inside a sealed-off building during a mysterious outbreak, ‘COLONY’ follows isolated survivors going up against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways. It’s the latest from Yeon Sang-ho, who opened a new chapter for Korean zombie cinema with "Train to Busan." The 200 billion-won blockbuster marks his first since "Peninsula" in 2020, returning after six years.
The film has been invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival this May, drawing major buzz. Yeon will return to Cannes 10 years after "Train to Busan." "Peninsula" was also invited, but the festival did not take place that year due to COVID-19, preventing attendance.
The copy “The Birth of a New Species” teases that these beings are not your typical zombies. Shots of survivors fighting tooth and nail to stay alive will have future viewers on the edge of their seats, stoking curiosity for what’s to come.
By choosing May, ‘COLONY’ breaks Korea’s long-standing blockbuster playbook of opening in late July and early August. While July-August has been the traditional peak season for local theaters, that idea has been fading. "The Roundup" series, which hit 10 million admissions during COVID-19, released Parts 2 and 3 in May, and Part 3 even in April. More recently, ‘The King's Warden’ drew 16 million admissions after a February launch.
This summer will also be packed with Hollywood tentpoles like "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," "The Odyssey," and "Moana," plus "Hope," one of the most anticipated Korean titles. Rather than jump into an overheated summer slate, ‘COLONY’ looks set to get a head start with a late-May launch.
It also perfectly aligns with Cannes, which runs May 12 to 23 ― prime time to maximize the film’s global promo boost.
