Hwang appeared at the end of Episode 7 of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Phantom Lawyer’ as Han So-hyun, a deceased woman who saved her younger sister Han Na-hyun (played by Esom) at the cost of her own life. After that, Hwang brought So-hyun’s bright, justice-driven personality to life―borrowing Shin I-rang’s (played by Yoo Yeon-seok) body to rescue a school bullying victim and steering them away from a dangerous choice―pulling viewers deeper into the story.
The Episode 8 ending at the amusement park had viewers in tears. When Na-hyun heard I-rang say, “Let’s take the very last row again today! Hands up, deal?” she realized So-hyun was present and sprinted over to hug her, face full of tears. So-hyun, understanding she’d been recognized, embraced Na-hyun back as she cried, leaving a lasting emotional punch.
Episode 9, which aired on the 10th, showed So-hyun spending time with Na-hyun while carrying a heavy heart―triggering another wave of tears. The sisters checked off bucket-list moments together: a day at the amusement park, wearing hanbok for a palace tour, and camping. But So-hyun decided she needed to restore a normal life for Na-hyun, who was struggling because of her, and then say goodbye.
For her final bucket-list wish, So-hyun chose “family reconciliation.” With I-rang’s help, she cleared up long-held misunderstandings between Na-hyun and their parents and prepared to leave. Just as she once didn’t hesitate to prevent her sister’s accident, So-hyun’s unwavering love for her family until the very end delivered a deep, resonant impact.
Hwang Boreumbyeol’s delicate portrayal of So-hyun’s emotions―caring for a sister hardened by guilt and longing, and parents grieving a lost child while worrying over the one who remains―heightened the drama’s completeness and left a strong impression.
