SBS’ "Curious Stories Y" is tracking the Daegu “suitcase murder” case.

The April 10 episode digs into what really happened―and the show’s exclusive look at suspect Jo Jae-bok’s shocking past.

On the morning of March 31, a lone suitcase was found along a riverside path in Buk-gu, Daegu, a spot usually busy with people out for a walk. A passerby reported it to police. When officers opened the suitcase, they uncovered a horrific truth: the body of a woman in her 50s was inside a small case.

That evening, police urgently arrested two suspects: the victim’s daughter, Ms. Choi (26), and her husband, Jo Jae-bok (27). Investigators moved quickly thanks to CCTV. Thirteen days before the discovery, cameras had captured the couple in broad daylight dragging a suitcase believed to contain the body and abandoning it nearby.

According to police, Jo had been assaulting his wife since the couple registered their marriage last September. The victim―the mother-in-law―had been living with them in a cramped studio, reportedly to protect her daughter. Neighbors recall the mother’s disheveled appearance and say Jo acted coercively, while the mother and daughter seemed constantly intimidated. One resident said Jo’s violent behavior was so frightening that even bystanders felt fear.

A preliminary autopsy suggests the mother-in-law died from multiple injuries caused by external force. While pursuing Jo’s background, the production team received an unexpected tip.

Producers learned Jo had been married once before. His ex-wife, who agreed to a difficult interview, recalled repeated domestic violence during their marriage. “We registered our marriage in 2021. His domestic violence was too much, so we divorced. The pattern is the same,” she said. She also claimed Jo may be tied to another, previously unreported crime.

"Curious Stories Y", which will reveal new details about the Daegu suitcase murder and the suspect’s disturbing past, airs Friday, April 10, at 8:50 p.m.
