Actors Lee Byung-hun, Han Ji-min, and Lee Hee-joon are joining forces for the Disney+ series "The Koreans".
"The Koreans" is a fresh, fully localized reinterpretation of FX’s hit series "The Americans," produced by the studio behind acclaimed titles like "Shōgun" and "The Bear." Spanning six seasons, "The Americans" blended spy-thriller tension with themes of conviction and love, winning Best TV Drama at the 76th Golden Globes. It also ranked No. 8 on the BBC’s 100 Greatest TV Series of the 21st Century and boasts a 96% Tomatometer and 94% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
"The Koreans" relocates that concept to Seoul in the 1990s, set inside a middle-class apartment complex. Expect the era’s distinct vibe, a colorful cast of characters, relatable emotional arcs, and edge-of-your-seat suspense.
Global star Lee Byung-hun ('No Other Choice,' 'Squid Game,' 'KPop Demon Hunters') leads as Kim Myung-jun, an elite North Korean spy who has lived undercover in South Korea for over a decade. He’s set to ground the series with layered storytelling and a commanding, finely detailed performance.
Han Ji-min ('Heavenly Ever After,' 'Love Scout,' 'Our Blues') plays Yoon Hwa-kyung, a North Korean spy posing as Kim Myung-jun’s meticulously disguised wife. She will trace the role’s deep emotional beats with her trademark delicacy.
Lee Hee-joon ('Karma,' 'Bogota,' 'Blood Free') steps in as Cha Ki-seok, a former violent-crimes detective newly assigned to the national security investigation unit who moves in next door to the couple―ramping up the tension between the three.
Director Ahn Gil-ho, known for sharp realism and meticulous detail in works like "The Glory," "Memories of the Alhambra," and "Stranger," is at the helm. Screenwriter Park Eun-gyo, who explores new themes across projects including the drama "Made in Korea" and "The Silent Sea," and the films "A Normal Family" and "Mother," pens the script.
"The Koreans" will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.
