The film “The King's Warden” is catching fire overseas after crossing the 10 million admissions mark in Korea.
On day 36 of release in Korea, “The King's Warden” surpassed 12 million moviegoers and is still No. 1 at the box office in week five. It’s the first Korean film in two years to top 10 million admissions since "The Roundup: Punishment", cementing its status as a defining hit of the year.
The overseas rollout is heating up too, especially in North America. After a staggered U.S. launch starting February 13 (local time), the film is now playing in more than 50 cities across the U.S. and Canada, reaching global audiences.
In its second North American week, “The King's Warden” outpaced the North American box office record of "The Roundup: Punishment". As of March 9, it has grossed $1.79 million, outperforming the North American runs of "12.12: The Day" and "Extreme Job". Its North American footprint is also growing―expanding to 125 screens this week, with approximately 150 screens cumulatively since opening―an unusually wide release for a Korean film in the region.
JBG Pictures USA, the film’s North American distributor, said, “Riding the current momentum, we’re expanding locations every week. We’re prioritizing key areas with large Korean communities so more audiences can catch the film, and are doing our best to secure additional theaters,” underscoring the movie’s surge beyond Korea to the world.
Now the fourth historical film to top 10 million admissions in Korea―and blazing through global theaters―“The King's Warden” is in theaters now.
