Director Jang Hang-jun of the film ‘The King's Warden’ is buying fans coffee to say thanks for the box-office love.
On the 5th, investor-distributor Showbox announced, “Director Jang Hang-jun of ‘The King's Warden’ will host a coffee truck event at 12 p.m. on March 12. The event will take place at the Seoul Shinmun Plaza in Jung-gu, Seoul, where Director Jang will be on-site to personally hand out drinks and share his heartfelt thanks.”
After crossing 9 million admissions nationwide in just 27 days and entering the countdown to 10 million, fans zeroed in on Jang’s box-office pledge. Back in January on SBS POWER FM’s "TEN," he jokingly floated promises like changing his name, getting plastic surgery, and throwing a cruise party if the film hit 10 million.
With the 10 million mark now within reach, Jang revised that pledge. On the 4th, the YouTube channel "SBS Radio" dropped a live prerelease of a recorded segment ahead of the main "TEN" broadcast. Director Jang Hang-jun and ‘The King's Warden’ producer Jang Won-seok appeared as guests.
Facing a likely 10 million, Jang said, “I can’t believe it.” About his earlier promises, he explained, “Our day-one numbers were so low that I was discouraged. I appreciated the interest, but I wondered if that was even newsworthy. I definitely didn’t think we’d hit 10 million,” adding, “We were worrying about just breaking even, and they told me to make a pledge―so I was only trying to get a laugh.”
He continued, “It’s a lot of pressure. Even the production company held a countermeasure meeting. What if I had said I’d give away half my net worth?” He joked, “If I were to get plastic surgery, I’d want a full redesign. After the talk about changing my name, I got hundreds of messages from acquaintances saying they wanted to check in one last time before I change my name and number. I’m getting roasted by the group.”
Jang added with a laugh, “Between us, how can anyone keep every promise? Is there even one person on earth who does? Jesus Christ? Buddha? That’s about it.” He then revealed that, instead of those pledges, he’s preparing a coffee truck event in central Seoul for the public.
As of the 5th, ‘The King's Warden’ has drawn a cumulative 9.59 million moviegoers.
