The new SBS Fri-Sat drama ‘Phantom Lawyer’ (written by Kim Ga-young and Kang Cheol-gyu, directed by Shin Joong-hoon) follows a “possessed” attorney, Shin I-rang (played by Yoo Yeon-seok), who helps restless spirits settle their grudges, and a cold-blooded elite lawyer, Han Na-hyeon (Esom), who stakes everything on winning. After first-look stills of I-rang’s brother-in-law and office manager Yoon Bong-su (Jun Suk-ho) piqued curiosity, a newly released family photo on the 11th spotlights the world that shaped Shin I-rang.
Gathered in front of mom Park Kyung-hwa’s (Kim Mi-kyung) restaurant, “Dugeun Dugeun Butcher’s Diner,” the Shin family keeps it simple but solid. Shin I-rang and Park Kyung-hwa hold tight to niece Yoon Da-bong’s (Lee A-rin) hand, joined by brother-in-law Yoon Bong-su and sister Shin Sa-rang (Son Yeo-eun). It’s not flashy, but it radiates warmth. Their easy, natural way of leaning on each other speaks to years of sticking together through thick and thin.
Park Kyung-hwa is a mom who raised two kids on her own, slicing meat at the butcher shop after losing her husband early. While others went flower or foliage viewing, she stayed on the grind, guided by responsibility and love. Sister Shin Sa-rang filled in for their busy mom and looked after I-rang; brother-in-law Yoon Bong-su wears his affection on his sleeve. And Yoon Da-bong is the family’s human vitamin. I-rang has a soft spot for his niece in particular.
That’s why Shin I-rang can’t turn away from people. His values were shaped not by something grand, but by a grounded, loving home. He didn’t become a lawyer to change the world―he wanted to succeed so his family would never have to envy anyone. After he unexpectedly began seeing ghosts, that same nature made it impossible to ignore them. Even if their stories don’t belong to the living, his instinct to right what’s unfair pulls him into eerie cases―and turns him into the “possessed lawyer.”
With this family photo sharpening the emotional portrait of Shin I-rang, the production team shared, “The Shin family is the emotional bedrock that firmly supports I-rang. Their real, unglamorous warmth naturally seeps into his choices and actions.” They added, “The cheerful, heartfelt chemistry among family members―each with their own rhythm and personality―will be a key reason to watch.”
SBS’s new Fri-Sat drama ‘Phantom Lawyer’ premieres Friday, March 13 at 9:50 p.m.
