Actor Jung Woo-sung’s team is pushing back on rumors he engineered a wave of supportive posts about his performance, calling the claims “groundless.”
On the 14th, his agency, Artist Company, said, “The viral marketing allegations are baseless. The agency has never engaged in any astroturfing or promotional activity of that kind.”
Speculation flared after multiple messages praising Jung’s acting in the Disney+ original series "Made in Korea" began popping up across online communities and parenting forums. The timing followed a run of articles criticizing his performance, prompting suspicion that the positive posts were coordinated.
In "Made in Korea," Jung plays prosecutor Jang Geon-young, who goes head-to-head with entrenched power. Some viewers took issue with his heightened tone, gestures, and laughter, calling them distracting―and, in harsher takes, “bad acting.”
Director Woo Min-ho recently appeared on the YouTube talk show, hosted by Choi Wook, and offered context: “Jang Geon-young carries trauma tied to Korea’s tragedies and the Japanese colonial era. Episode 4 explores his childhood. Once you see that, the slightly exaggerated speech and gestures Jung Woo-sung chose make sense.”
Set in the turbulent 1970s, "Made in Korea" follows Baek Ki-tae (Hyun Bin), who treats the nation as his profit machine in a quest for power, and the relentless prosecutor Jang Geon-young (Jung Woo-sung) determined to bring him down. All six episodes of Season 1 are now streaming on Disney+.
