The romance film “Once We Were Us,” starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, has surpassed 1 million admissions just 12 days after its release.

According to the Korean Film Council’s box-office tracker on the 12th, “Once We Were Us” drew 340,273 moviegoers nationwide from January 9-11, claiming No. 1 at the weekend box office for the first time since opening. Its cumulative admissions now stand at 1,000,273.

After opening on December 31, “Once We Were Us” initially trailed “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” holding at No. 2. In its second week, it leapfrogged the “Avatar” title to seize the top spot―and kept the momentum through the weekend to dominate the charts. It’s also a rare feat for a romance to cross the million-viewer mark in Korea.

The upward swing shows no signs of slowing. The film attracted 260,000 viewers over its opening weekend, then climbed to 340,000 in week two―a classic word-of-mouth bump. At this pace, it could not only clear 1 million but push toward 1.5 million and beyond.

“Once We Were Us” follows Eun-ho and Jung-won, once passionately in love, who reconnect by chance a decade later and sift through the traces of their past. The film is a Korean remake of the 2018 Chinese hit “Us and Them,” tailored to local sensibilities.
