Celebrity chef Ahn Sung-jae has been tapped as the digital cover star for men’s fashion magazine Arena Homme+.
In the January issue spread shot with a luxury watch brand, the Mosu chef channels an easy, just-off-the-streets-of-Brooklyn vibe with cool, restrained charisma that grabs the eye.
In the accompanying interview, Ahn opened up about the ongoing questions of “identity” that have shaped his work while running Mosu.
“I’m always thinking about identity. The moment you stop, you start to blend in,” he said. “Our edge is being different. I want guests to discover new sensations in a finished dish, and to feel that their time and experience at Mosu are truly one of a kind.”
He also tempered expectations for the Season 2 of "Culinary Class Wars." “I’m trying not to build it up too much. Season 1 was embraced far beyond what I imagined, and I’ll watch Season 2 with that same mindset,” Ahn noted. “Before Season 1, I asked the producers not to turn the chefs into the punchline. They really nailed the planning and the edit, and I’m very grateful.”
As for goals, both professional and personal, Ahn didn’t hold back. “I’d be lying if I said I don’t want a Michelin star,” he admitted. “But first, I want to grow our roughly year-old restaurant into the best possible space. Great food comes when every team member can look back on a day that felt meaningful.” On a more personal challenge, he’s preparing for a pro boxing test: “I’m not trying to become a professional fighter, but once I started, I wanted to see it through,” he said with a laugh.
