'The Sea Tiger' is a touching true story that follows the journey of a MV Sewol diver overcoming adversity and returning to his family. It is based on the reportage novel 'It's a Lie' (2016) by author Kim Tak-hwan, which looks into the lives of civilian volunteers like the late diver Kim Gwan-hong and Gong Woo-young.
Kim Tak-hwan, a renowned author known for many bestsellers, first met with diver Kim Gwan-hong in March 2016. He vividly recounted his firsthand experiences at the site of the MV Sewol sinking, Maenggol Channel. Despite the constraints of diving sickness limiting rescue operations to 30 minutes, Kim Gwan-hong's detailed descriptions brought to light the untold stories from beneath the waves.
The film uniquely portrays the stories of civilian divers who, wearing diving suits connected to oxygen hoses instead of regular tanks, entered the water up to four times a day. The combination of the actors' performances and the audience's imagination adds an immersive quality to the movie.
In the dark depths of the sea, the selfless acts of the divers, motivated solely by the desire to save the children, and the trauma they experienced are brought to life through the powerful performances of actors like Lee Ji-hoon, who plays the role of Kim Gwan-hong, along with veterans Son Seong-ho and Park Ho-san.
'The Sea Tiger' was the winning entry in the feature film screenplay category of the 4.16 Foundation's Cultural Content Contest in 2021 and was invited to the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival, where it sold out.
