Director Yoon Jong-bin revealed the secret behind the fantastic chemistry among the cast of his new series 'Nine Puzzles'.

At the press conference for Disney+'s 'Nine Puzzles' held on the morning of the 14th at a hotel in Dongdaemun, Seoul, Director Yoon Jong-bin introduced the series as "a mystery drama at its core, featuring two characters with unique personalities unraveling the truth behind a series of murders."

"After reading the script for the first time, I was captivated by its gripping narrative. However, my initial thought was, 'Can such events actually happen in real life?' The characters Yi-na (Kim Da-mi) and Han-saem (Son Suk-ku) are so unique that I wondered if such people could really exist. From a realism perspective, it might make the audience skeptical. Thus, I felt the need to elevate the tone to a world that straddles the line between reality and unreality, a more comic-like world. The art direction and spaces were also designed to emphasize a world that is distanced from reality," he added.

The project features not only lead actors Son Suk-ku, Kim Da-mi, Kim Sung-kyun, and Hyeon Bong-sik but also a plethora of leading actors such as Lee Sung-min, Lee Hee-joon, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-woong, Ji Jin-hee, Kim Eung-soo, Lee Joo-young, and No Jae-won in supporting or special appearances.

Director Yoon Jong-bin, known for his films 'Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time', 'The Spy Gone North', and others, has always managed to infuse even the supporting characters with tremendous presence and vitality. Hence, there was considerable interest in the unique personalities and performances of the supporting cast in 'Nine Puzzles'.

Regarding this, Director Yoon said, "With the series spanning 11 episodes, there were a lot of characters involved. Moreover, these characters aren't just making brief appearances; they're all connected to the case. Each episode even has its own protagonist. If actors lacking presence were cast, viewers might quickly forget them. Therefore, it was crucial to cast actors with both a strong presence and acting skills. To assemble this extensive cast, I mobilized all my contacts, calling them up to arrange meetings and casting offers. 'Nine Puzzles' features the entirety of my 20-year career network in the film industry."

To enhance the chemistry among the lead actors, including Son Suk-ku, Kim Da-mi, and Hyeon Bong-sik, Director Yoon also made exceptional efforts. "I usually have many meals with the actors during a project, but this time it was quite challenging. The reason being, Son Suk-ku and Hyeon Bong-sik don't drink alcohol, and Kim Da-mi is an introvert. So, we communicated a lot through KakaoTalk. I think I exchanged messages with Kim Da-mi and Hyeon Bong-sik, who are of the younger generation, quite a bit," he shared, eliciting laughter.

'Nine Puzzles' is a mystery thriller that follows 'Yi-na' (Kim Da-mi), the only witness to an unsolved case and a current profiler, and 'Han-saem' (Son Suk-ku), a detective from the violent crimes unit who suspects her until the end, as they unravel the secrets of a serial murder case that restarts with mysterious puzzle pieces.

Directed by Yoon Jong-bin, known for 'Narco-Saints', 'The Spy Gone North', and 'Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time', and featuring the fresh pairing of Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku, 'Nine Puzzles' is a well-crafted masterpiece set to release in three batches: six episodes on May 21st, three episodes on May 28th, and the final two episodes on June 4th, totaling 11 episodes.
