The Jeonju International Film Festival (Co-Executive Directors Min Sung-wook and Jung Joon-ho) is set to host a special retrospective on the renowned Korean filmmaker Bae Chang-ho.

In collaboration with the Korean Film Archive, the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival will present a mini retrospective in the Korean Cinema section titled 'Bae Chang-ho Retrospective: Between Popularity and Experimentation.' This special event will highlight the life, cinematic philosophy, and inner world of Bae Chang-ho, a pioneer in Korean cinema, through his experimental and daring works that navigate the line between mainstream appeal and artistic experimentation.

The retrospective will feature a total of four films, including one documentary and three digitally restored works by Bae Chang-ho. The documentary, 'Bae Chang-ho's Close-Up' (2025), directed by Park Jang-choon, a professor at Kwandong University, alongside Bae Chang-ho, will have its world premiere. It explores the director's life, cinematic universe, and philosophy.

The digitally restored films include 'The Winter of the Year Was Warm,' 'Hwang Jin-yi,' and 'Dream.' 'The Winter of the Year Was Warm' (1984), based on the novel by Park Wan-seo, tells the poignant story of two sisters who survive the Korean War. It has been restored in 4K for the first time for this screening. 'Hwang Jin-yi' (1986), which showcases Bae Chang-ho's initial foray into auteur filmmaking with its minimal cuts and slow pacing, will also be screened in 4K. 'Dream' (1990), featuring actors Ahn Sung-ki and Hwang Shin-hye, is a representative work of Bae Chang-ho that balances experimentation and mainstream appeal, and will be shown in a digital version.

Additionally, Bae Chang-ho will engage with audiences through guest visits (GV) alongside special guests during the retrospective. Details on the program schedule and guest appearances will be available on the official Jeonju International Film Festival website.

The 26th Jeonju International Film Festival, co-hosted with the Korean Film Archive, will take place from April 30 (Wednesday) to May 9 (Friday) across Jeonju, including the Jeonju Film Street.
