On January 6, Yoo Yeon Seok had an interview with a news outlet about his recently concluded project, MBC's television series 'When the Phone Rings'.
Based on the web novel with the same title, 'When the Phone Rings' tells the story of a three-year married couple.
Yoo Yeon Seok played 'Baek Sa-eon', a former announcer who became a presidential spokesperson with nationwide popularity.
'Baek Sa-eon' and his wife 'Hong Hee-joo' (Chae Soobin) were married for convenience and have been living without talking to one another.
Then, one day, their married life changes with a threatening phone call from a kidnapper.
Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soobin captivated viewers with their realistic portrayal of romance as the 'Sa-Ju couple' (short for 'Sa-eon' and 'Hee-joo'), creating 'deeply immersed' fans wishing their real-life romance.
"I'm very grateful that people thought that way.", Yoo Yeon Seok said regarding the fans' requests asking him and his co-star to date one another or tie the knot in real life.
"But marriage? It's not up to me, really.", he added and laughed.
"Those responses made me realize the love the series received. Although it's a thriller with a hint of comedy along the way, we wanted the romance to stand out. After all, it is ultimately a love story of a couple. The thriller elements are the glue that makes their love work."
"We were awkward at first. Soobin is quite shy, and it took some time for me to bond with her."
"'Hong Hee-joo' speaks in sign language at the beginning of the series, and it didn't help us either. Shooting those scenes was like filming my monologue scenes."
"We became closer as time went on. Soobin is in the same agency as me, and she has an unexpectedly cheerful side. She relied much on me and followed me well throughout the series, which I'm thankful for."
