Actor Jang Dong-joo has sparked concern after sharing a shocking video on social media and subsequently going out of contact.
On May 22, Jang Dong-joo posted a shocking video on his social media, writing, "There were promises I failed to keep with myself thousands of times, as well as promises I couldn't keep to my family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues." He added, "Lastly, there is an unkept promise I made with my father, pinky-swearing. I will use this crisis as an opportunity to surely find my original self from two years ago. Let's wake up. Now is the last chance."
Regarding this, Jang Dong-joo clarified, "This action is not intended to threaten anyone or imply extreme choices." He explained, "It is a video posted to engrave a resolution about my own misguided life into my brain." He also added, "Currently, I am receiving help for treatment and recovery alongside my family, pulling myself together."
Since then, attempts have reportedly been made to contact Jang Dong-joo, but he remains unreachable.
Previously, on May 15, Jang Dong-joo suddenly announced his retirement on his social media, stating, "I intend to lay down my life as actor Jang Dong-joo starting today." His agency, Management W, responded, "The retirement announcement was made unilaterally by the actor without any prior discussion or consultation with us." They added, "We believe the relationship of trust with the actor has reached a virtually irreparable level, and we plan to carefully review all matters, including whether to maintain the exclusive contract relationship in the future."
In a subsequent live broadcast, Jang Dong-joo personally opened up about his financial difficulties, saying, "Out of approximately 4 billion won in debt, I have paid off over 3 billion won, and currently about 700 million to 800 million won remains." He said, "Under the daily pressure of debt, I judged that it would be difficult to carry out normal acting activities," adding, "I will pay off the debt until the end without filing for bankruptcy."
