Actors Ha Jung-woo and Son Suk-ku will portray Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, respectively, as reimagined by director Yoon Jong-bin. The two will be working together for the first time in director Yoon Jong-bin’s new film, "Ordinary People" (literal title).
"Ordinary People" is the story of Roh Tae-woo, the second-in-command who hides behind the mask of an "ordinary person" while aiming for a higher position alongside the absolute power-wielder Chun Doo-hwan, and the people surrounding him.
Director Yoon Jong-bin, who has depicted stories of people struggling to survive in worlds governed by rigid hierarchies and classes in films such as "Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time," "Kundo: Age of the Rampant," and "The Spy Gone North," plans to capture the true faces and survival methods of human groups against the backdrop of modern Korean history through "Ordinary People."
There is significant interest in how director Yoon Jong-bin, who has shown exceptional ability in capturing the atmosphere of an era and sharply delving into the psychology of characters, will portray human desire for power within the turbulent modern history.
The film will feature a star-studded cast. First, Son Suk-ku, who has been praised for his performances that break conventional molds in various genres―including the series "A Killer Paradox," "D.P." seasons 1 & 2, and the dramas "Nine Puzzles" and "Heavenly Ever After"―will play the eternal second-in-command, Roh Tae-woo.
The film will dramatically showcase the complex and subtle inner life of Roh Tae-woo, who was remembered only as the friend of the absolute power-wielder Chun Doo-hwan and an eternal second-in-command rather than for his own name and actions, until he finally achieved his long-held dream of becoming the number one. This marks his second collaboration with director Yoon Jong-bin following "Nine Puzzles."
Ha Jung-woo will take on the role of Chun Doo-hwan, the absolute power-wielder of the military dictatorship. Ha Jung-woo, who has been called "Yoon Jong-bin’s persona" after working with the director since his debut, will be collaborating with him for the 6th time through "Ordinary People."
While Chun Doo-hwan has been dramatized in various films and dramas, curiosity is building regarding how the version played by Ha Jung-woo will be newly created. The meeting between Son Suk-ku and Ha Jung-woo, who will portray the complex and subtle relationship between a number one and a number two who met as classmates at the Korea Military Academy and forged a special friendship, is also highly anticipated.
Ji Chang-wook, who has built a solid filmography with intense emotional acting as well as action in works such as the film "Revolver" and the dramas "The Manipulated" and "The Worst of Evil," will play Heo Hak-seong, a junior at the Korea Military Academy whom Roh Tae-woo considers a thorn in his side, adding sharp tension to the story. In addition, Hyun Bong-sik from the film "The Match," the Netflix series "Aema," "Narco-Saints," and "A Killer Paradox" will play Jung Ho-joong, a classmate and friend of Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan, while Seo Hyun-woo from the Netflix film "Wall to Wall," "My Name Is Loh Kiwan," and the film "Decision to Leave" will play Park Cheol-woong, a prosecutor at the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office and an aide to Roh Tae-woo.
The production will involve Moonlight Film, which produced the Netflix series "Karma," "Narco-Saints," the film "The Match," and the drama "Nine Puzzles," as well as Sanai Pictures, which produced the Netflix film "Mission: Cross," and the films "Revolver" and "Hunt."
"Ordinary People" will be released via Netflix.
