On April 17, SBS held a press conference for its new variety show 'Choigang Road - Foodspoiler' (hereafter Foodspoiler) at a cafe in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Choi Kang-rok and Kim Do-yoon attended alongside host Defconn and producers Son Jung-min and Ha Jung-seok.
Foodspoiler is a fresh food-entertainment format where chef Choi Kang-rok, two-time champion of cooking survival shows, Michelin one-star chef Kim Do-yoon, and famed foodie host Defconn travel across Korea. Leaning on their experience and signature techniques, they call themselves “spoilers of taste” and reveal the hidden secrets behind great flavor.
The two chefs are close off-camera―they call and grab drinks often―but filming a nationwide variety show together is a different game. Kim Do-yoon, who hasn’t done much TV, said, “I learned a lot from Choi while filming. That’s the difference experience makes.”
Choi Kang-rok, however, confessed, “I felt a bit of a crisis. I even wondered, ‘What if we end up cutting ties after this is over?’” Both chefs are famously quiet and introverted, but on Foodspoiler they clashed with zero concessions when it came to taste.
“There were points where our knowledge or experience with food collided,” Choi said. “If the natural flow is to say, ‘Yeah, that’s right,’ I think I tended to take the opposite stance. After shoots, I’d call Kim and say, ‘Let’s not break up over this,’ more than a few times.”
In response to Choi’s “cut ties” comment, Kim Do-yoon reassured him: “That was only during filming. I never thought about that otherwise―not even once.” He showed unwavering support for Choi.
Their chemistry? Think “sweet country grandparents.” Defconn said, “They feel as warm as an old married couple in the countryside. It’s got bromance and deep emotion.”
Producer Son Jung-min agreed: “Like country grandparents―you can tell what the other is thinking with just a look, and sometimes they get a little sulky. It all happens quietly. Watching these two pure souls feels like seeing organic, unprocessed humans.” Son added, “Without Defconn, it would be downright silent. Having him as MC is such a relief, and I want to thank him for bringing out their charm.”
Foodspoiler premieres Tuesday the 21st at 9 p.m. on SBS.
