Director Hong Sang-soo’s 34th feature, "The Day She Returns", is gearing up for release with a new poster and trailer.
The film follows a middle-aged actor who quit acting after marriage and comes back to the screen in an indie film after divorce, capturing a single day in her life. The cast includes Song Seon-mi, Jo Yoon-hee, and Park Mi-so.
The poster, revealed on April 14, shows Song Seon-mi (as Bae Jeong-su) taking a brief break between interviews on the lawn in front of a German restaurant, the film’s main location. It uses a still image lifted directly from the movie.
The trailer appears as if it were shot with a triple-exposure technique. Song Seon-mi’s character, Bae Jeong-su, spends half a day doing back-to-back interviews with three young interviewers. The triple exposure invites viewers to see three separate timelines and moments of experience all at once.
Both the poster and trailer spotlight Hong Sang-soo’s signature black-and-white aesthetics. The shoot reportedly wrapped in just four days. The film is composed of 10 shots. Kim Min-hee, Hong’s longtime muse and partner, does not appear on screen but contributed as production manager.
The film was invited to the 76th Berlin International Film Festival for its world premiere. After the screening, Asian Movie Pulse praised it as “one of Hong Sang-soo’s best works to date,” while Festivalblog wrote, “The subtlety of the way the dialogue flows is truly outstanding,” calling it “the best and most approachable of Hong Sang-soo’s recent films seen at the Berlinale.”
"The Day She Returns" opens in theaters on May 6.
