'Phantom Lawyer' Passes 12.8%: The Everyday Heroes Around Yoo Yeon-seok Are Stealing the Spotlight

"Phantom Lawyer" has surged past 12.8% in ratings, locking down prime time as the extraordinary moves of the characters orbiting Yoo Yeon-seok grab attention.

In SBS’s Friday-Saturday drama "Phantom Lawyer" (written by Kim Ga-young and Kang Cheol-gyu, directed by Shin Joong-hoon), the key players aren’t exactly “elite on paper.” Lead character Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok) had the talent to become a star attorney, but he kept getting rejected from jobs because of the stigma tied to his father, a corrupt prosecutor. His steadfast brother-in-law Yoon Bong-su (Jeon Seok-ho) is an “unknown actor” scraping by on bit parts while living with his in-laws, and Father Mateo (Jung Seung-gil) is a humble priest who tends a small neighborhood church.

Their true strength shows when they face “wronged souls.” Because they’ve battled society’s prejudice themselves, they know how to listen to the quietest voices of the dead. Even though they can’t see ghosts, Yoon Bong-su and Father Mateo greet the air where Shin I-rang points, and they pray for the deceased. Their pure goodwill―choosing to believe and respect what they can’t see―turns them into the only “superheroes” for spirits with nowhere else to go.

Their edge isn’t flashy superpowers. It’s real-life skills. As a bit-part actor, Yoon Bong-su taps into his range to become whatever the moment needs: a detective who corners idol composer Go Jong-seok (Jeong Si-heon) as he tries to flee, and even a terrifying “ghost” who forces a confession from researcher Gu Hyo-jung (Eom Jun-gi) after a colleague’s murder. He’s the ultimate “skilled-trade hero.” Father Mateo anchors Shin I-rang’s shaky heart with spiritual guidance and gentle prayer, proving to be a true pillar of strength.

I-rang’s mom, Park Kyung-hwa (Kim Mi-kyung), who runs a butcher-restaurant, is the root of his compassion―she’s the reason he can’t turn away from the wronged and the weary. She’s also his fiercest guardian, throwing herself in harm’s way whenever her son is in danger. Even as she worries about the risks he takes, she cooks up a high-schooler’s dream tteokbokki for the late idol trainee Kim Soo-a (Oh Ye-ju). That mother’s touch offered comfort stronger than any law book.

"Phantom Lawyer" underscores a simple truth: You don’t need a chosen few to save the world. When everyday neighbors bring “kind hearts” and “great goodwill” together, miracles happen. After suddenly gaining the ability to see ghosts, Shin I-rang accepts his calling as a “savior of the dead,” and the ordinary heroes who hold him up deliver not just catharsis―but deep, human warmth.

The production team shared, “Shin I-rang and the people around him each have their own shortcomings, but together, those gaps create the most perfect teamwork,” adding, “In Episodes 7-8, as we hit the midpoint, the ‘Shin I-rang squad’ grows even tighter, and an even more exciting story unfolds.”

"Phantom Lawyer" airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m.
