Actor Jun Ji-hyun is returning to the big screen after 11 years with the film “Colony.”
“Colony” follows a group of survivors trapped in a locked-down building after a mysterious outbreak. As the infected evolve in unpredictable ways, the isolated survivors fight to stay alive. Jun Ji-hyun plays Kwon Se-jung, a biotech scientist who becomes the survivors’ leader.
Jun has shown her range across films like "The Thieves," "The Berlin File," and "Assassination" ― from sly, scene-stealing charm to tightly controlled emotion and polished action.
This is the first movie Jun chose after "Assassination"’s blockbuster run ― and her first in 11 years. It’s already drawing major industry buzz, especially with zombie-genre master director Yeon Sang-ho at the helm.
New stills released on the 25th set the tone. We see Kwon Se-jung striding forward with resolve. We see her freeze for a split second in shock, then lock eyes on the infected. We see a breathless face-off. Kwon Se-jung, who can’t stand injustice, was denied reappointment as a professor. After her ex-husband Han Gyu-seong (Go Soo) offers to line up a new job, she goes to the Dunguri Building for a conference ― and ends up trapped. As a biotech expert, she studies the unknown infected’s behavior and evolution, doing everything she can to lead the survivors and escape.
Why choose “Colony” for her long-awaited big-screen return? Jun said, “I’ve always been a true fan of Director Yeon Sang-ho, and above all, the tight, no-frills script was incredibly appealing.”
Director Yeon Sang-ho said of Jun, “Her instant immersion was extraordinary. I was reminded she’s a true veteran.” Their first collaboration only heightens anticipation for “Colony.”
“Colony” opens in theaters this May.
