Choi Ji-woo’s new film "Sugar" (directed by Choi Shin-chun) is turning its on-screen heart into real-world impact.
Producers announced on the 19th that a portion of the film’s proceeds will be donated to the Korea Type 1 Diabetes Association.
The move stems from the film’s core of lived truth. "Sugar" is inspired by the real story of Kim Mi-young, who sparked legal and policy change after building medical devices herself to help her son diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The team says the donation is a way to carry "Sugar"s themes of hope and solidarity beyond the theater.
Led by Kim herself, the Korea Type 1 Diabetes Association advocates for patients’ rights, awareness, and institutional support. Funds will help cover treatment costs for children and teens facing financial hardship and fuel public-awareness campaigns.
“This film wouldn’t exist without the fierce courage of Kim Mi-young and families like hers,” the production company said. “We hope the warmth audiences feel translates into real help for patients. Every ticket can be a small act of ‘good spending’ that nudges the world in a better direction.”
Choi Ji-woo stars as Mira, a mother who becomes a warrior for her son, when "Sugar" opens January 21.
