Scheduled for its premiere on June 13th (Friday) at 9:50 PM, the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'Our Movie' (written by Han Ga-eun and Kang Kyung-min, directed by Lee Jung-heum) tells the urgent love story of a film director, Lee Je-ha (played by Namkoong Min), who sees no future, and an actress, Lee Da-eum (played by Jeon Yeo-been), who lives as if today is her last. Director Lee Jung-heum, known for his detailed and fresh direction in dramas like 'Falsify', 'Nobody Knows', and 'Inspector Koo', is gathering much attention with this traditional melodrama.
Director Lee Jung-heum reminisced about his first encounter with 'Our Movie', saying, "I felt compassion and comfort watching the characters Da-eum and Je-ha strive to support each other and continue their lives despite adverse conditions." He added that he was curious about how the two characters would end up and how viewers would accept their love story, which motivated him to direct the project.
Describing 'Our Movie', Director Lee said, "It's a traditional melodrama where a man and a woman with different outlooks and attitudes towards life meet, try to understand each other, and eventually fall in love through the positive influences they exchange based on that understanding." He emphasized that making the audience directly see and understand the characters' emotions was a crucial element of his direction.
He also mentioned, "While I wanted to preserve the metaphor of 'movie' through various formats, I edited the film so that the audience would be left with only the afterimages, rather than directly feeling it." Unlike his previous works, he focused more on the actors' emotional expressions than on the details of events or situations, and shot primarily in honest close-ups to capture fleeting moments. "Avoiding the directing styles I tried in past works felt like a new challenge for me," he expressed his affection for the project.
Furthermore, the director expressed his utmost trust in actors Namkoong Min and Jeon Yeo-been, who will bring the characters Lee Je-ha and Lee Da-eum to life. Describing the character Lee Je-ha as someone who hardly shows emotion and has few lines, Director Lee said, "Although Namkoong Min is quite different from Lee Je-ha in terms of thought process and behavior, this gap actually enhanced his understanding of the character, ensuring that not a single action or expression was wasted. As a result, we were able to see an incredibly detailed portrayal of Lee Je-ha by Namkoong Min."
He praised Jeon Yeo-been, calling her "a person both physically and mentally healthy," and said, "The healthy energy inherent in Jeon Yeo-been was exactly what was needed for Da-eum in 'Our Movie'. Jeon Yeo-been approached Da-eum's pain and sorrow with care every time. This cautiousness brought vitality, unwavering will, and vibrancy to her portrayal of Lee Da-eum."
With the director's affection and effort towards the actors, characters, and the project, 'Our Movie' is set to follow the currently airing 'The Haunted Palace' and will premiere on June 13th (Friday) at 9:50 PM.
